Initially, the U.S. Army issued a one-piece camouflage suit, but it proved ineffective and was only distributed in limited numbers—typically to specialized units such as mechanics or snipers. Its resemblance to German Army camouflage also raised concerns about potential friendly-fire incidents.

Designed for reversible wear, one side features a yellow‑green for spring and summer, while the reverse displays a brown "dead leaf" tone for autumn and winter. While the cut closely follows the USMC Type P‑41 jacket, the reversible construction led to a functional adaptation: instead of symmetrical chest pockets, one was placed on the front and another on the back.
